While even ten minutes can be difficult for a busy parent to spare, it can make an enormous difference. Kumon students whose work is home marked advance to new material sooner with fewer errors and less repetition. In fact Kumon instructor records have shown time and again that home marked students progress 30% to 100% better than those who aren't marked. That means they become better learners. Isn't that worth ten minutes a day? Why is this so?
It allows your child to learn immediately from any mistakes by correcting them while still fresh in their mind.
It encourages children to work harder knowing that work will be checked immediately.
It helps parents monitor child's progress, and provide more timely and useful guidance.
It leaves more time at the Kumon centre for "what's next" rather than reviewing assignments.
DAILY PRACTICE: The Kumon Method is ALWAYS SUCCESSFUL if all homework is timed accurately and completed on a DAILY BASIS. Results will be less than satisfactory if the program is followed in a "hit and miss" fashion. THIS PROGRAM MUST BECOME A DAILY DISCIPLINE. Establishing a daily Kumon routine is essential to the student's success in this program. Any parent or student having difficulty developing a daily Kumon routine should speak to Mr. Sylvestre. It is very important to accurately record START and FINISH times on the worksheets. This lets us know whether the student's efforts are within the STANDARD COMPLETION TIME. The SCT, as well as the student's accuracy, determine progression to the next step. Please ensure that the START-FINISH times are carefully recorded.
REPETITION FUNDAMENTAL TO LONG TERM SUCCESS IN KUMON: The necessity for the amount of repetition given is not always apparent to students and parents. Experience has shown us that students who do not sufficient repetition in the lower levels have much more difficulty in the advanced levels.
WORKLOAD: The number of worksheets that a student is assigned may be changed at any time. It is important that the student be given only an amount of homework that he/she can easily complete on a daily basis.
WHEN EXTRA WORKSHEETS ARE NEEDED: If a student is going to need worksheets due to an upcoming absence, please give prior notice either by note or phone. The worksheets for each student are planned in advance of each class, and without notice, we may not be able to accommodate your child(ren)'s needs.
HOME MARKING: Diligent home marking is fundamental for the success of each student in our Kumon program. Only when a student's work is MARKED DAILY and ALL ERRORS ARE CORRECTED BY THE STUDENT, will optimum success be achieved. STUDENTS SHOULD NEVER MARK THEIR OWN WORK NOR HAVE ANY ACCESS TO ANSWERS BOOK upon successful completion of a level.
CHEATING: Surely this is a subject that is most unpleasant to consider yet necessary to discuss. A large percentage of our students are with us for remedial reasons. It is our goal to bring them up to a beyond grade level as soon as possible. Our goal for our enrichment students is to help them to maximize their potential. Regardless of whether students enroll for remedial or enrichment purposes, cheating simply cannot be tolerated. With the first occurrence, the student will be spoken to by Mr. Sylvestre. With subsequent occurrences, the parents will be notified so that we may jointly remind the students that cheating robs them of opportunities for growth, as well as wastes my time and your money.
